A Must for New Immigrants: Set Up a U.S. App Store ID, Gmail and iCloud for a Secure, Reliable Digital Identity
When you first move to the U.S., besides handling the paperwork for daily life and taxes, setting up your own digital identity is also a very important first step. Whether you're downloading local U.S. apps, opening a bank account or using all kinds of government and private services, you need a U.S. Apple ID (App Store account) and a Gmail account, and you should make good use of iCloud or Google Drive for cloud backups.
Here are the three digital identity basics every new immigrant should set up:
📌 1. Create an Apple ID (U.S. App Store Account)
What it's for: downloading U.S. apps (banking, transit tickets, rental platforms, health apps) and connecting to iCloud to back up your data.
How to sign up
iPhone/iPad:
Open the App Store and tap "Forgot password or don't have an Apple Account?"
Choose "Create Your Free Apple Account"
Enter your birthday, name and email, and set a password
Verify your email, choose your country/region (United States), then set up a payment method and phone number
Mac or computer: you can create an account on the Apple website with the same steps.
👉 Tip: be sure to turn on Two-Factor Authentication to keep your account secure.
📌 2. Sign Up for a Gmail Account
What it's for: use it as your main contact email for notices from banks, government agencies, rental platforms and other official sources. You can also use it to sign in to Android, Google Drive and other services.
Click "Create account" and choose what it's for (personal, child or work)
Enter your name, birthday, username and password
Verify your phone number and recovery email to finish setup
👉 Gmail gives you 15GB of free cloud storage, shared with Google Drive, which is great for storing important documents and photos.
📌 3. Back Up Your Data with iCloud or Google Drive
Why back up?
So you don't lose documents (passport, ID, lease, school or work documents)
So you can restore your data quickly when you change phones or computers
So you can access and share files anytime
How to use iCloud
On iPhone: go to "Settings" > "Apple ID" > "iCloud" > turn on "iCloud Backup"
On iCloud.com: you can download and manage files directly
How to use Google Drive
Sign in to Google Drive with your Gmail account and get 15GB of space for free
Sync your data through the phone app or the desktop version
👉 We suggest storing passport scans, proof of address and immigration documents in the cloud, with encryption or access permissions set to keep them safe.
📌 Bottom Line: A Digital Identity Is a Basic Must for New Immigrants
Once you've signed up for an Apple ID and Gmail and set up iCloud or Google Drive, you can not only download the apps people commonly use in the U.S. but also:
Connect with banks and official services
Build a secure, reliable digital identity
Protect important documents from getting lost
👉 Tip: after you sign up, be sure to turn on two-factor authentication and back up regularly to truly protect your digital assets.
